Running Through the Wall– How to Use Creativity to Overcome Adversity

It never fails. Life is going great, everything according to plan, and then a big, fat, brick wall of adversity stops you dead in your tracks. In the fall of 1994, life was going great for Jerry Hoak. He was popular in school, dating for the first time and playing shortstop for his all-star baseball team. And then, on September 21, his fourteenth birthday, he received a phone call that would change the course of his life. Now executive creative director of The Martin Agency, Jerry Hoak will share his story and strategy for putting creativity to work in the face of the inevitable brick walls of life and business.

Our October speaker, Jerry Hoak, is Executive Creative Director and Managing Director of The Martin Agency.  On Jerry’s 14th birthday, he was diagnosed with leukemia. But while most kids like him were wishing for trips to Disney, Jerry was thinking long-term. He asked Make-A-Wish Foundation for a computer and used it to start telling his story. Twenty-three years later, he is a cancer survivor and ECD/managing director at The Martin Agency. He has a new computer and is still telling stories – only now for brands.

After graduating from the VCU Brandcenter, Jerry spent more than a decade in New York working at Droga5, Ogilvy and Taxi. In 2015, his Google Android online video, “Friends Furever,” became the most shared ad of all time and his Prudential campaign was featured on Freakonomics in an episode titled “How to Make a Smart Ad.” That same year, he was named one of Business Insider’s 24 Most Creative People in Advertising.

Now at The Martin Agency, Jerry oversees the creative department and works across clients including GEICO, Land O’Lakes, KAYAK, Sling TV, Timberland PRO and Donate Life.

He and his wife Katie recently gave birth to their daughter, Prinn, who they named after Jerry’s first childhood oncologist. Jerry proudly serves on the board of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Virginia – coming full circle.
